‘Paisley’ is a design obtained by depicting the ‘boteh’ or ‘buta’, a drop-shaped plant motif of Persian origin.

These designs became very popular in the West in the 18th and 19th centuries, following imports from British India, in particular reproduced on Kashmir shawls, and then imitated locally. After a period of oblivion, they became popular again in the 1960s for their similarity to psychedelic patterns, typical of LSD culture.

The origins are rooted in India, where paisley is known as ‘Ambi’, which in Punjabi means ‘mango’.

In Iran the motif, known as ‘Boteh Jegheh’, has been used since the Sassanid dynasty.
